ADVISORY: CAP to Host Former Secretary of Defense Cohen to Discuss the Future of American Defense

Washington, D.C. — With debate over the federal defense budget heating up, the Center for American Progress will host former U.S. Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen for a wide-ranging discussion on the future of American defense. From how to manage difficult politics to global areas of crisis to juggling long-term strategic priorities and making smart investments, this conversation will offer insight into the way forward for America’s national security in a turbulent time.

The past year has been a turbulent one for national security. Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, extremists from ISIS to Boko Haram upending nation states, widespread refugee crises, the collapse of Libya and Yemen, and pandemic disease have eroded the stability of the international order. Domestically, fractious politics make tough choices on defense difficult, raising the risk of ongoing sequester and a misalignment of U.S. strategy with resources and investment.
