Washington, D.C. — As has been widely reported, a record number of unaccompanied children, some as young as 3 years old, are arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. The children are fleeing extremely dangerous and violent conditions in their home countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. They are not only seeking safety in the United States, but also in other neighboring countries such as Panama, Costa Rica, and Belize.
Please join us for a conversation to discuss this regional crisis with an expert on the ground in El Salvador, as well as experts on unaccompanied minors. They will discuss the driving factors behind the current crisis, the harrowing journey of the children and their exploitation and abuse by smugglers and human traffickers, as well as what happens to them after they are apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol.
