AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT: CAP’s Conathan on BP Settlement, Next Steps

Washington, D.C. — Today, BP announced it has reached an agreement with the federal government to pay $4 billion in fines and other payments and plead guilty to 14 criminal charges related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Michael Conathan, Director of Ocean Policy at the Center for American Progress, will be available to comment on the next steps to ensure that appropriate action is taken to adequately compensate affected states for economic damage, natural resource damage, and civil liabilities, as well as additional considerations such as raising liability caps for future spills and ensuring that fines received by the U.S. Treasury go to the communities that need to rebuild.
