The Senior Editor of Wide Margins and will support the transition away from, an existing blog at American Progress, to Wide Margins, a new quarterly digital magazine that will launch in January 2023. After launch, the Senior Editor will help manage the long-term content and digital strategy for Wide Margins. Strong understanding of digital best practices and an ability to edit for the internet are required. This is a fully remote position.


  • Manage short- and long-term editorial planning for Wide Margins, working with the Editor-in-Chief to identify themes and content for quarterly issues and with the Executive Vice President for Communications and Strategy to ensure that the content strategy is supportive of American Progress’ overall goals and priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief to formalize and enforce Wide Margins’ processes, including editorial standards, contracts, and writer recruitment.
  • Manage Wide Margins’ Twitter account, @WideMarginsMag, by devising daily content and analyzing its success.
  • Make field pitches for Wide Margins, as well as regularly pitch and recruit writers for the website.
  • Manage Wide Margins’ freelancer payment process, ensuring that writers are paid on time and coordinating as needed with American Progress teams to resolve outstanding issues.
  • Edit Wide Margins articles regularly.
  • Publish posts for Wide Margins through WordPress.
  • Support the transition from and @TalkPoverty, as needed.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Five or more years of digital strategy or journalism experience, including work with digital projects, search engine optimization, digital campaigns, Google Analytics, and social media.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Experience with common content management systems.
  • Ability to juggle daily site operations and long-term projects.
  • Commitment to usability and accessibility best practices.
  • Sound editorial and ethical judgement.
  • Deep knowledge of marginalized communities and skill with centering the experiences of people who are often excluded from mainstream media coverage.
