Summary

American Progress has an opening for a Senior Director of Employee Relations on its Human Resources team. The Senior Director will be responsible for ensuring all employees feel fully included in the organization and will help investigate any concerns around equity or diversity. The Director will also be responsible for ensuring employee concerns are considered when conducting training and development; developing recruitment and selection policies and practices; administering benefits; and overseeing compliance with relevant employment regulations such as the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. In addition, they will oversee all training and development initiatives and recruitment efforts as well as assist with other human resources initiatives as needed. American Progress seeks candidates who can provide outstanding customer service in challenging situations to employees who are dedicated to the progressive movement.

The Senior Director of Employee Relations will be driven by American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all Americans, through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary liaison for fielding employee questions or concerns and be available, in-person and virtually, to discuss employee issues.
  • Oversee all employee training and professional development offerings, developing new programs as needed.
  • Provide strategic guidance on recruitment efforts and assist with a high-volume selection process to ensure a large and diverse pool of applicants for all positions.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Human Resources and General Counsel to investigate and resolve any employee complaints of harassment, discrimination, or any other illegal or unethical behavior.
  • Coordinate the biannual employee climate survey, communication of results, and implementation of changes agreed upon with the Executive team.
  • Collaborate with the Benefits Manager to ensure all reasonable requests for accommodations due to disabilities are implemented and followed.
  • Conduct 60-day reviews with new hires and their managers to ensure new staff and their supervisors are receiving the training and support they need.
  • Ensure all performance improvement plans are administered properly and that employees receive the support they need to be successful or formulate an exit strategy.
  • Lead the development of employee relations initiatives to ensure a positive work experience for all, including helping staff and managers navigate the return to the office and the new hybrid work environment.
  • Conduct exit interviews and monitor the results to further understand employee concerns and problems, drafting plans to address issues as needed.
  • Continually improve the comprehensive onboarding process so that all new employees understand that their authentic selves are fully welcome and that American Progress values the diverse perspectives that each unique individual brings.
  • Provide guidance to employees and supervisors on employee relations issues in collaboration with the Vice President of Human Resources and General Counsel, as needed.
  • Assist in developing and implementing personnel policies and procedures to ensure employee perspectives are considered and propose updates to the employee handbook when necessary.
  • Monitor employee data regularly to identify needs for additional support and interventions.
  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in the efficiency of the Human Resources team and services provided.
  • Supervise and oversee the work of direct reports and other Human Resources staff in the absence of the Vice President.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Ten years of experience in a human resources or employee relations leadership position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expertise in best practices to ensure a positive and productive work environment.
  • Experience working with mission-driven organizations and passionate staff.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate employee policies and consequences clearly and concisely.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and sense of humor that enable the candidate to expertly handle sensitive and nuanced employee situations.
  • Ability to effectively manage staff to ensure they are engaged and productive, meeting goals, and providing outstanding service to colleagues.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple priorities efficiently.
  • Experience with human resources information and payroll systems and the ability to track and report on employee demographics.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy of all employee documents and communications.
