Summary

American Progress has an opening for one fall intern with its Inclusive Growth department. American Progress is a leader in addressing the deep inequities in the U.S. economy to ensure that all Americans can live secure and stable lives. This department’s work focuses on lifting families out of poverty, ending disparities in public health, and protecting and advancing the rights of women. The department uses research, messaging, and policy to defend and advance progressive policies that build an economy that works for all.

Inclusive Growth interns will have the opportunity to complete substantive research, policy, and communications work across the department’s policy focus areas. Within this framework, the intern will develop the skills and experience to contribute effectively to the national conversation. The intern will be driven by American Progress’ mission “to improve the lives of all Americans, through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country.” They will be part of a dynamic department that supports work across American Progress’ five crosscutting priorities:

  • Strengthening health and ending the pandemic
  • Building an economy for all
  • Tackling climate change and environmental injustice
  • Advancing racial equity and justice
  • Restoring social trust in democracy

The Inclusive Growth intern will work primarily within the Tax and Budget Policy and Business, Government, and Workers teams, but may support the department’s other three teams as needed. The five teams within the Inclusive Growth department are:

  • Tax and Budget Policy: The Tax and Budget Policy team promotes an economy that works for all, led by robust public investments and a more equitable tax code.
  • Business, Government, and Workers: The Business, Government, and Workers team reimagines the social contract among government, corporations, and workers to produce more inclusive and more sustainable economic growth. 
  • Poverty to Prosperity: The Poverty to Prosperity team works to develop, protect, and expand vital policies that alleviate hardship and ensure economic stability for people nationwide.
  • Women’s Initiative: The Women’s Initiative develops robust, progressive policies and solutions to ensure all women can participate in the economy and live healthy, productive lives.
  • Health Policy: The Health Policy team advances health coverage; health care access and affordability; public health and equity; and quality and efficiency in health care payment and delivery.

 Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to writing memos, blog posts, columns, event summaries, and reports.
  • Monitor and summarize relevant congressional activities, such as hearings.
  • Compile and manipulate data in Microsoft Excel and/or Stata.
  • Draft rapid-response communications.
  • Update fact sheets, talking points, and documents on pertinent topics.
  • Track and develop content for social media and enhance the department’s social media presence.
  • Perform other duties such as conducting targeted research and reporting on policy meetings, seminars, hearings, and lectures. Whenever possible, interns are encouraged to write on a subject of their choice, either as the individual author of a column for the website or as a contributor to a larger piece.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Current pursuance of an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree, or a recent graduate.
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills.
  • Interest in public policy, advocacy, and communications.
  • Familiarity with different types of traditional and social media.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and seeks direction as needed.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to diagnose problems and identify creative solutions.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.

American Progress interns are paid at the Washington, D.C., minimum wage rate of $16.10 per hour. Interns receive paid time off for federal holidays. Interns are expected to be available to work from and commute to American Progress’ Washington, D.C., office at least two days per week.
