Greater Middle East Initiative

On the heels of the Sea Island G-8 summit, and the EU-U.S. summit in Ireland, President Bush is attending the NATO summit in Istanbul this week. This series of summits provides a critical opportunity for the Bush administration to rally support for its international initiatives. One of these is the "Greater Middle East Initiative," which has so far has, unfortunately, fallen short of expectations. Stepping in to fill the gap on Middle East democracy, the German Marshall Fund has released a bold new transatlantic strategy for promoting democracy and human development in the greater Middle East.
