Living Without Protections

Thirty-one states lack comprehensive sexual orientation and gender identity legal protections, which puts lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, Americans who live in these states at risk.

Many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, Americans and their families are at risk of legally being fired from their jobs, denied housing, or refused service at a store or restaurant simply because of who they are. Julie Williams is a transgender woman who lives in rural Pennsylvania, one of the 31 states that lack comprehensive sexual orientation and gender identity protections. Watch as Julie talks about her experience living without basic nondiscrimination protections, the toll it takes on her employment opportunities, and her desire to live free from fear.
