After killing more than 1,000 people and leaving a path of destruction across the Caribbean, Hurricane Matthew approached the U.S. earlier this month as a Category 4 storm. With wind speeds of 130 miles per hour just off the U.S. coastline, Hurricane Matthew buzz-sawed all the way up the coast from Florida to the Carolinas, killing at least 44 Americans. In North Carolina, the catastrophic flooding left in Matthew’s wake is a tragic situation that is still unfolding. Although it’s too early to tally the official cost of damage in the U.S., estimates reach near $10 billion.
