As Syria Crisis Worsens, an Option to Help Refugees Help Themselves

As tens of thousands of Syrians seek refuge from the regime military offensive around the northern city of Aleppo, the work of caring for the 4.6 million Syrians who have already fled their country continues. Last week, international donors gathered in London pledged $10.7 billion to help Syrians displaced by civil war. This amount is a record but cannot, by itself, provide for the needs of the growing number of Syrian refugees. There is, however, another path that could build on this positive development and help narrow the shortfall between what millions of displaced Syrians need and what the world will supply: allowing more Syrian refugees to provide for themselves.
