Led by GLSEN and six other co-leaders, these comments were submitted in response to the Department of Education’s public hearing on Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. They offer several suggestions for the department on how to ensure better implementation, compliance, and enforcement of Title IX. This includes suggestions for how to better ensure an educational environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex—including on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender status, sex stereotypes, sex characteristics (such as intersex traits), and sexual harassment and violence. Additional recommendations are provided for how to appropriately implement Title IX’s religious exemption; update other agencies’ Title IX rules to reflect core Title IX principles; and strengthen Title IX compliance and enforcement.
