This letter, led by the Center for American Progress, is a follow-up to a May 2020 letter advocating for at least $250 billion in additional federal stimulus funding for public education. In addition to providing new research in support of the funding and equity provisions recommended in the letter, the signers also state their opposition to any attempts to mandate that schools reopen for in-person instruction without consideration of local health conditions and science. The signers also oppose any set-asides that divert public funds to private schools—for example, school vouchers, education savings accounts, tax credit scholarships, and expanded requirements for equitable participation.
