The Power of Women: Intersections in the Global Climate and Reproductive Rights Movements

Center for American Progress
2:30 - 4:00 PM EDT

Climate change poses an unprecedented threat to the global community, and women are more likely to bear the brunt of the consequences due to inequities in power at the intersections of gender, race, and income, among other factors. Women around the world—particularly women of color, low-income women, and women in the “global south”—are already facing many challenges that are exacerbated by the effects of climate change, from poor reproductive and maternal health outcomes to worsened economic security to surges in gender-based violence. At the same time, women are strategically positioned to combat climate change and secure sexual and reproductive health and rights. They are leading the charge in their families, communities, and in politics to promote equity and bodily autonomy and mitigate the worst consequences of a changing planet.

For International Women’s Day 2020, we invite you to join the Center for American Progress and Planned Parenthood Global for an armchair discussion with youth climate activist Vanessa Nakate, followed by a panel discussion featuring domestic and international leaders in climate justice and reproductive rights. The panelists will explore the intersections of climate change and reproductive health and autonomy and discuss the domestic and international initiatives on which women are leading the way.

The Center for American Progress is continually monitoring the development and impact of the global spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. The safety and well-being of our panelists and audiences are of the utmost importance to us. While we continue to host public events on the policy issues that face our nation, we are asking all panelists and attendees of CAP events to refrain from coming to CAP if they or someone they reside with is sick or has traveled within the past 14 days to a country designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as “Level 3, Avoid Nonessential Travel” or “Level 2, Practice Enhanced Precautions.” As always, individuals can instead tune in to events via the livestream on our website at http://americanprogress.org/events, and we will continue to live caption our events on the stream so that they remain accessible to all.
