Strengthening Child Nutrition Programs: Back to School and Back to Work for Congress

Keynote Remarks by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack

1:00 - 2:00 PM EDT

From inner cities to rural farmlands, children are returning to school to learn and grow—but for thousands of hungry children nationwide, learning is difficult or impossible. When Congress returns from its August recess, the House and Senate will debate the reauthorization of many of the country’s most critical programs that provide meals and nutritional support to children—including school breakfasts and lunches, summer meals, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC.

Please join the Center for American Progress as we host Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, who will provide keynote remarks about how these programs reduce child poverty and improve outcomes for millions of children each day—particularly in the area of obesity reduction and improved health—and how reauthorization provides an opportunity to improve and strengthen these programs to support the entire family. Following his remarks, Secretary Vilsack will have a conversation with CAP President Neera Tanden and take audience questions.
