Please join the Center for American Progress for a panel discussion about the politics, the principles, and the promise of the Common Core.
The Common Core State Standards, which were adopted by more than 40 states and the District of Columbia, are one of the most significant shifts in American public education in decades. The standards aim to improve the quality of education by creating a set of academic expectations for the knowledge and skills that students need to be successful in college and the 21st century workplace.
Unfortunately, many are confused about what the Common Core actually is because of misinformation campaigns that have political goals instead of educational ones. With the recognition of real implementation challenges, this panel will discuss the current state of the debate, the politicization of the issue, and actual challenges and successes on the ground. As part of this event, the Center of American Progress will release a parent poll, a report outlining the evidence and science that went into creating the standards, and a brief analyzing how the issue has become politically charged.
