How Gender Bias Undermines LGBT Equality

A discussion with Masen Davis, Executive Director of the Transgender Law Center, and Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, Senior Fellow and Director of the FIRE Initiative, Center for American Progress

6:30 - 7:30 PM EST

All too often, issues of gender disparity and LGBT inequality are discussed separately from one another, as if they are mutually exclusive. Yet research suggests that the gender bias that thwarts women’s progress also underlies discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. At the final event in the fall Progressivism on Tap series, we will discuss the parallels in disparities faced by women and LGBT people—including the wage gap, workplace harassment, access to health care and health care coverage—and examine how sexism undermines full equality for women and LGBT Americans. This discussion will provide an opportunity for both men and women, gay and straight, transgender or not, to discuss their experiences with sexism and how to combat it, and will also serve as a reminder that there can be no LGBT equality without gender equality.
