It’s no secret that America’s young students no longer lead the world in learning proficiency or attainment. Other industrialized countries in Europe and Asia have passed us by.
Just as alarming are the huge achievement gaps between students from families who "have" and those who "have not." Our academic competitors have much narrower wealth and income gaps and provide more equitable and generally better education than American schools. We need to get serious about renewing and modernizing public education if our children are to thrive in this increasingly competitive world.
