American Progress has an immediate opening for a Public Lands Senior Director for the Energy and Environment team. The Senior Director will drive advocacy campaigns, coalition engagement, and communications tactics to further American Progress’ land conservation, climate change, and clean energy goals. The Public Lands program focuses on developing and advancing progressive natural resource and energy policy on America’s public lands, with a focus on stemming the nature crisis and its disproportionate impact on historically marginalized communities. The ideal candidate for the Senior Director position will bring experience and strong commitment to working on conservation, energy, and climate change issues and to balancing a diverse portfolio of strategic planning, writing, research, staff development, budgeting, and project management.
- Lead the Energy and Environment team on public lands issues to identify and establish American Progress’ organizational priorities and strategies to achieve ambitious conservation, climate, and energy policies.
- Direct the Public Lands program’s fundraising and grant reporting efforts, and oversee the team’s budget and general administration.
- Work with key stakeholders to develop and implement relevant legislative and political strategies and campaigns at the national, state, and local levels.
- Leverage American Progress’ research and policy capabilities to drive a narrative and serve as a resource to partners and the public.
- Continue efforts to expand and broaden the conservation community to include a diverse and inclusive group of stakeholders working on the issue.
- Manage the day-to-day management of the Public Lands program, including overseeing team members’ work planning and professional development and conducting editorial oversight of written products and statements.
- Liaise with American Progress’ senior management and other American Progress teams.
- Represent the Public Lands program to the press, policymakers, academics, and other outside stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- At least 10 years of political, government, and/or nonprofit experience in conservation or climate policy or advocacy.
- Management, leadership, and fundraising experience as well as a strong commitment to supervising and developing staff.
- Demonstrated excellence in research, editing, writing, and analytic ability.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize.
- Exceptional project management experience with very strong attention to detail and the ability to manage quick-turnaround deliverables, as well as long-term strategy implementation, reporting, and metric tracking.
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work well on a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to American Progress’ mission and the Energy and Environment team’s goals.
