Senior Fellow, Asia Program

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Senior Fellow with the Asia Program of the National Security and International Policy (NSIP) team. The fellow will manage and oversee the department’s work on Asia policy, including programs on China, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea. The person in this role will oversee the Asia Program’s substantive work, including writing reports and columns, engaging with the public and other stakeholders, and managing grants and helping to fundraise. The fellow will oversee and manage a team of five staff. This is a limited-term appointment of three years.


  • Develop and execute the strategic priorities of American Progress’ Asia Program.
  • Research, write, and edit expert columns, briefs, and reports.
  • Carry out grant-funded projects and develop ideas and pursue funding for new projects.
  • Plan and execute strategic communications, including developing op-eds with strategic voices to advance policy goals.
  • Engage with policymakers to drive the desired impact for American Progress’ policy goals and democracy solutions.
  • Engage in rapid response on the issues, including through talking points, fact sheets, columns, op-eds, and other tactics as appropriate; serve as a resource to media and policymakers.
  • Engage regularly with the diplomatic and foreign policy community.
  • International travel, including leading delegations, will be required once international travel becomes safe.
  • Work with the NSIP team to plan and coordinate meetings and events.
  • Support development work of fundraising and grant reporting.
  • Supervise the staff of the Asia Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience with a proven track record in the field.
  • Expert understanding of political, economic, and security issues in Asia.
  • Knowledge of federal policymaking and working with Congress and federal agencies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to set strategic priorities for a team and balance multiple projects at once.
  • Strong ability to formulate policy recommendations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on and with teams.
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and goals.
