Research Assistant, Democracy and Government Reform

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Research Assistant on the Democracy and Government Reform team to conduct research on democracy issues, federal courts, and legal policy. For this research and writing-intensive role, successful candidates will be highly detail oriented and have substantive research experience to put into practice. Candidates should have a familiarity with democracy, voting rights, the federal judiciary, and anti-corruption policy issues. This position is budgeted for $46,000 annually.


  • Conduct and support research and analysis on academic and legislative issues.
  • Assist the Director of Legal Progress and other members of the Democracy and Government Reform team with intensive research tasks and data analysis for products. This work may include conducting literature reviews; drafting talking points, columns, papers, charts, tables, and graphs; and proofreading, fact‐checking, and editing documents.
  • Provide administrative and substantive support to the Democracy and Government Reform team.
  • Help produce and distribute advocacy materials such as issue analyses, blog posts, and fact sheets.
  • Engage in digital strategy on behalf of the team, which will include drafting and distributing weekly “Courts Clips” that include relevant current events, legal analysis, and breaking news items involving the federal judiciary and contributing to the “Why Courts Matter” social media accounts.
  • Participate in the hiring of Democracy and Government Reform interns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience in research and writing for a nonprofit or advocacy group.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent employment experience indicating a research background.
  • Impeccable research, writing, and editing skills, including the ability to convey complex issues in clear and simple terms.
  • Experience utilizing social and traditional media to advance a policy agenda.
  • Experience working in a coalition with national organizations and partners is a plus.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and an entrepreneurial and creative thinker.
  • Ability to absorb key policy issues and debates quickly and thoroughly.
  • Ability to work well under tight deadlines with competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70.
