The Women’s Initiative is a comprehensive effort to marshal American Progress’ broad expertise and promote public policies that enable women to participate fully in the nation’s economy and society. Women in the United States have made enormous progress over the past 50 years, but workplaces and national policies have yet to adapt to our changing society.
American Progress believes that women—and the challenges they face—must be at the center of national policy debates in order to develop responsive solutions that will improve the lives of all women and their families. The Women’s Initiative’s strategy is to make the case that public policies that help women will also strengthen families, workplaces, and the nation. The team arms stakeholders, thought leaders, policymakers, and the public at large with innovative policy ideas and solutions. The Women’s Initiative also helps develop national and on-the-ground strategies to transform these ideas into concrete action. In its work, the Women’s Initiative recognizes and considers intersections of identity and circumstance, gauging how to shape the challenges women face.
Interns will learn many of the basic skills needed to be a policy professional at a progressive nonprofit. Primary internship responsibilities will include researching issues on women’s economic security, women’s health and rights, and women’s leadership.
Interns will conduct web-based research for working projects and preliminary research on areas of interest to the team. Interns will also compile and analyze data; write memos; assist in writing and reviewing larger projects; and report on webinars regarding various women’s issues. Candidates should have a general understanding of the current issues surrounding women’s equality and rights; women’s health, such as reproductive rights, maternal health, and the relationship between the Affordable Care Act and women; and women’s economic security, including issues such as paid leave, equal pay, and broader workplace rights.
Other duties may include conducting targeted research and reporting on policy meetings, seminars, hearings, and lectures. Whenever possible, interns are encouraged to write on a subject of their choice, either as a contributor to a larger piece or as the individual author of a column for the website.
All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply, though preference may be given to graduate students with experience, an academic background, or demonstrated interest in women’s issues.
American Progress interns are paid at the D.C. minimum wage rate. As of July 2019, that rate is $14 per hour. Effective July 1, 2020, the D.C. minimum wage will rise to $15 per hour. American Progress also offers interns metro benefits.

It works to transform progressive ideas into policy through rapid-response communications, legislative action, grassroots organizing, political advocacy, and partnerships with other progressive leaders.
