The Senior Policy Analyst for Postsecondary Education is responsible for conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses and literature reviews; writing reports and other products; and engaging with other organizations, researchers, and advocates to conduct research and advance postsecondary education policy priorities.
- Own an area of analysis for the Postsecondary Education team. This will include tracking major developments in that area, conducting appropriate analyses, providing commentary, and coming up with creative and workable policy solutions. The Postsecondary Education team is particularly interested in someone who wants to focus on equity, student debt and loan repayment, or student success.
- Produce a variety of written products that advance the Postsecondary Education team’s work on higher education equity, accountability, quality, and data. This will include three major reports every year or the equivalent volume of work including issue briefs, columns, and op-eds.
- Conduct quantitative analyses using data sets, including cleaning, merging, and using statistical software to produce original analyses.
- Conduct qualitative research, including analyses of statutory, regulatory, and other policy documents.
- Provide research support for members of the Postsecondary Education team.
- Present American Progress’ work through presentations and meetings with policymakers, coalitions, and others.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- At least five years of relevant work experience.
- Ability to write well, meaning the author can present ideas and arguments in a clear manner that will engage and be understood by the appropriate audience.
- Curiosity and a willingness to dive deep into various postsecondary education policy topics.
- Creativity and an ability to generate multiple solutions to problems.
- Ability to manipulate, probe, and clean data sets to ask interesting questions and share findings in a clear and convincing manner. This includes mastery of statistical software, such as STATA, SPSS, SAS, R, or similar programs.
- Clear verbal communication skills to share ideas in a succinct manner with audiences who may not be steeped in a topic.
- Ability to identify equity and opportunity gaps in data sets and build clear arguments rooted in principles of equity.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment under the pressure of deadlines.
- Ability to multitask.
