American Progress has an immediate opening for a Director/Associate Director of Economic Policy to help lead an important new project. The position requires strong quantitative skills, experience analyzing economic data and public policy, meticulousness, comfort with a fast-paced environment, and a passion for advancing progressive economic policy. The candidate’s primary role will be to help lead a small team analyzing the Trump administration’s economic policies with a focus on illustrating their effects on states and local communities and on different demographic groups. The candidate would also support the Economic Policy team’s work, especially on federal budget and tax issues. This is a term-limited position, through the end of 2020, subject to future needs and funding availability.


  • Help lead and perform research into the state-by-state and local effects of the Trump administration’s economic policies, with a focus on areas including wages, health care costs, financial deregulation, student loans, trade and tariffs, taxes, and federal budget cuts. Specialized expertise in particular policy areas is a plus but not required.
  • Author products such as issue briefs and fact sheets that distill key economic and public policy issues for nonpolicy-expert audiences.
  • Engage with allied groups and the media as American Progress publishes products and disseminates research findings, nationally and at the state and local levels.
  • Perform rapid response research on new issues that arise, such as when the Trump administration announces new policy actions.
  • Work with the American Progress digital teams to ensure that research and data is visually compelling for distribution via an engaging website and social media.
  • Identify new areas for research and timely engagement, and conceive of new products.
  • Ensure factual accuracy of products.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Strong quantitative skills and familiarity with economic data.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and eagerness to identify new areas of research and take ownership and initiative.
  • Broad familiarity with the federal budget and federal programs.
  • Good writing skills and instincts for data visualization.
  • Meticulousness and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well on a team.
  • Flexibility and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • At least three years of experience working in a field related to public policy.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Advanced degree, such as in economics, law, public policy, is a plus.
  • Political, legislative, or media experience is a plus.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.
