AWS Solution Engineer

American Progress has an immediate opening for an AWS Solution Engineer. Working as part of a technical team, the AWS Solution Engineer will contribute to the building and enhancement of software applications that facilitate the organization’s outreach to its audiences.   • Data integration:
    • Prime the optimization, secure delivery, and persistence of data exchanged between applications and systems.
    • Design, develop, and implement service layer APIs and connections.
    • Define and deploy new microservices to replace server-based processes and scheduled tasks.
    • Make large and complex data more accessible, understandable, and usable using data visualization tools and applications.
  • Software development:
    • Contribute to the building and maintenance of software products that support CAP’s digital outreach and messaging activities.
    • Develop and roll out web applications according to design and testing functionality against business requirements.
    • Work with staff across the organization to solicit requirements, manage expectations, and provide continued support.
    • Participate in and effectively contribute to project and team meetings.
  • AWS DevOps:
    • Support the efforts to enhance the availability, scalability, and performance of the cloud infrastructure.
    • Provision audit tools and develop policies and processes.
    • Harden of the entire stack and improve code pipeline and deployment processes.


  • 7 or more years of overall experience in software systems, database development, and IaaS/PaaS.
    • 3 or more years of demonstrated experience with full stack web development and data sharing in a cloud environment using databases and document stores.
      • Hands-on experience with at least one relational database such as MySQL or Postgres is required.
      • Knowledge of NoSQL databases and document stores is desired.
    • Prior experience with RESTful API’s is preferred.
    • 2 or more years of hands-on experience with the AWS platform and services including: Computing (EC2, Lambda), Storage (S3), Database (RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache), Networking (VPC, CloudFront, R53, API GW), Integration (SNS, SQS), and Management Tools (CloudWatch, CloudTrail, CloudFormation, IAM, CLI).
  • Strong and evolving competence in several programming languages, software frameworks, and cloud technologies.
    • Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, CSS3/LESS/SASS, SQL, and Python is required.
    • Prior experience with PHP application development in a WordPress environment is highly desired.
  • Hands-on experience developing and sustaining software applications in a cloud environment (AWS) with a knowledge of Linux operating system.
    • Strong command of Linux shell scripting and AWS CLI is required.
    • Strong knowledge of SDLC and agile development techniques is expected.
    • AWS Associate Certification is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with team software productivity tools and technologies.
    • Deep understanding of code versioning utilities such as GIT and issue tracking and documentation tools such as JIRA/Confluence is required.
    • Knowledge of virtualization software, build tool chains and package managers including Virtual Box, Vagrant/VVV, gulp, grunt, npm, and composer is highly preferred.
    • Experience with automated testing tools (e.g. selenium) is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work independently, learn rapidly, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Prior work experience in nonprofit organizations is a plus.
