Major Gifts Officer

The Major Gifts Officer at American Progress reports to the Director of Individual and Corporate Giving and is responsible for raising resources from individual and corporate donors to support the mission of American Progress. The Major Gifts Officer’s job is twofold: provide stewardship to current donors and expand the current donor base.


  • Manage a portfolio of prospects and donors in a primary region with a focus on soliciting gifts of $10,000 and higher, both to the Center for American Progress, a 501(c)(3) organization, and its sister organization, the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) organization.
  • Research new prospective donors, analyze their giving histories and potential, and develop successful engagement strategies.
  • Manage relationships with prospective and existing donors throughout the gift cycle, including: identifying, qualifying, and initiating contact with potential leadership and major gift donors; developing appropriate cultivation strategies; moving potential donors toward solicitation and closure; and making solicitations when appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with policy teams on major gifts activities and support their fundraising efforts.
  • Organize small- and medium-scale events to introduce American Progress to new audiences and raise money.
  • Produce fundraising communications including, but not limited to, letters, emails, newsletters, proposals, presentations, and reports. This includes drafting original copy and editing documents.
  • In consultation with the director, set annual individual fundraising goals; track solicitation amounts, anticipated gifts, pledges, and income; and provide regular revenue and cash flow updates on projections.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Three to five years of successful fundraising experience working in a nonprofit organization or campaign.
  • Proven track record of soliciting and securing major gifts.
  • Enthusiasm for prospecting and researching new donors.
  • Experience in creating a major donor pipeline.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills; energetic with an ability to develop relationships.
  • Aptitude to think about the organization from the perspective of donors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; detail oriented, with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Capacity to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment.
  • Familiarity with fundraising best practices, standards, and ethics.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Must support the mission of American Progress and be committed to a broad progressive agenda.
