About Us

There is little disagreement that the American health care system is broken. Forty-six million Americans do not have health insurance, health care premiums are increasing 5 times faster than wages, and health care spending consumes 16% of our total economic output. We need real reform.

The Center for American Progress is dedicated to enhancing public discussion about the American health care system and promoting fundamental change. CAP educates policy makers and the public about the current system, sponsors policy analysis and public opinion research on health care issues, and works with coalitions of leaders, advocates and citizens to engage in this debate. CAP is committed to real reforms that provide affordable coverage for all Americans, maintain individuals’ choice of doctors and plans, control costs, and make preventive care a national priority. We believe that as a nation, we must ensure that anyone who works hard and plays by the rules does not go with decent health care and is not driven into economic hardship because of health costs.
