Prior to becoming a Center for American Progress’ project in 2008, Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities, or BLSP, had 10 years of history as a robust, not–for-profit organization with the same budget priorities mandate. In the past three presidential election cycles, BLSP has had an aggressive grassroots presence in Iowa and New Hampshire ahead of the first primary and caucus. BLSP brought attention to the priorities agenda among voters and caucus goers through creative marketing campaigns that reached both constituents and candidates, while leveraging the presence of the press core for extensive media coverage.
BLSP, together with its sister organization TrueMajority, reached more than 500,000 people with their common agenda through online organizing. BLSP has 10 years of success eliminating waste and protecting human needs programs, including:
- Eliminated funding for the “Bunker Buster,” a new generation of nuclear weapons.
- Stopped funding for more B-2 nuclear bombers.
- Restored HeadStart funding, preventing erosion of government’s most effective proven poverty-fighting program.
- Introduced congressional budget legislation in 2006 and 2007 to enact Sensible Priorities, building momentum with 38 co-sponsors the first year and 81 the second year.
