Washington, D.C. — In advance of the May 1 observance of Workers’ Day, the Center for American Progress and the Immigration Policy Center will release "Revitalizing the Golden State: What Legalization Over Deportation Could Mean to California and Los Angeles County" by Dr. Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda and Marshall Fitz, which compares the extreme economic consequences that would result from deporting the undocumented workforce with the economic stimulus that would result from putting this workforce on a path to legal status. The analysis offers strong statistical support for broad reform of the nation’s immigration policies.

This CAP-IPC report shows how much California and L.A. County stand to lose by pursuing local policies that would drive undocumented immigrants from the state. It then shows how much they stand to gain from a national program that reforms our legal immigration system. This analysis underscores the value of immigrant workers’ contributions, and undocumented immigrants specifically, to the economy. The analysis finds that the economic and fiscal consequences of widespread deportation for California and L.A. County would be devastating because of the volume of jobs supported through their labor, consumption, and tax revenue.

Please join Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; Maria Elena Durazo, executive secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor (Invited); Dr. Raúl Hinojosa Ojeda, founding director of the North American Integration and Development Center at the University of California, Los Angeles; and Angela M. Kelley, Vice President for Immigration Policy and Advocacy at the Center for American Progress, to discuss the real numbers behind the immigration debate in California.

What: Press call to discuss the advantages of legalization compared to the current policy of deportation and its impact on the economy of California and L.A. County.
