STATEMENT: Carmel Martin on the NEA’s and the AFT’s Reaffirmed Commitment to the Common Core State Standards

Washington, D.C. — Carmel Martin, Executive Vice President for Policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement reacting to the news that national teachers unions; the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers reaffirmed their commitment to the potential of the Common Core State Standards as they brought their national conventions to a close today:

We commend both the NEA’s and the AFT’s leadership for their continued support of the promise the Common Core State Standards represent and echo their call for teachers to have a central role and meaningful voice in how the standards are implemented. We look forward to our continued partnership with both unions to effectively translate the standards into instruction in a manner that will make the biggest difference for students across the country.
