Washington, D.C. — The New York State Legislature today passed a broad package of gun violence prevention measures, championed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D). Enactment of the legislation makes New York the first state to act in response to December’s tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

I commend Gov. Cuomo for his impressive leadership in moving this landmark legislation to prevent gun violence through the New York legislature. Our nation cannot bear to witness another heartbreaking tragedy such as the one in Newtown, nor should we continue to tolerate the senselessness of 33 gun murders every day. The legislation passed in New York serves as a model for how our nation’s policymakers can protect our children and our communities by enacting common-sense measures to address the gaps in current laws.
