RELEASE: CAP’s Krehely on the Institute of Medicine’s LGBT Health Report

Washington, D.C. — Jeff Krehely, Director of the LGBT Research and Communications Project at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement on today’s release of the Institute of Medicine’s "The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People" report:

"The Institute of Medicine’s ‘The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People’ report is a groundbreaking study. It conclusively states that LGBT people have unique health experiences and needs, and that it is critical for health policy experts and leaders to take them seriously. Importantly, the IOM makes a clear call for better data collection on the LGBT population, including adding questions on sexual orientation and gender identity to federal health surveys. Better federal data collection on the LGBT population is a policy priority for the Center for American Progress and we are glad to see IOM make such a compelling case for it.

The IOM is an unbiased and well-respected voice within the health policy community. IOM’s work on LGBT health signals that this is a nonpartisan issue and that we all have the responsibility to work to make sure everyone in America, including LGBT people, has access to high-quality, affordable, and culturally competent health care."
