Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress will host a press call on Thursday to discuss the findings of a new bipartisan survey of Western voters’ views about whether U.S. public lands should be transferred to state government ownership and management.
Jointly conducted by a bipartisan polling team of two leading national opinion research firms—Republican-leaning Public Opinion Strategies and Democrat-leaning Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates, or FM3—this public opinion analysis is the first in-depth research on Western voters’ opinions about the management of national forests, parks, and public lands and whether this management responsibility and associated costs should be transferred to state governments.
Utah enacted a law in 2012 calling for U.S. public lands to be transferred to state ownership. Similar proposals have been put forward or are in development in seven other Western states.
The public opinion survey was conducted by phone between September 10 and September 14, 2014, and reached 1,600 voters in Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming.
