ADVISORY – Defeating ISIS: Building a Framework to Support a Reliable and Effective Opposition to Assad and ISIS

Washington, D.C. – With President Barack Obama’s plan to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS, outlined, the Center for American Progress will host a panel discussion with leading Middle East experts on Friday, September 12 from 12:00 p.m. ET to 1:30 p.m. ET to discuss ways to degrade and defeat ISIS and the effort to develop a capable and reliable partner in Syria to fight both ISIS and President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The panel will include Ambassador Robert Ford, former U.S. Ambassador to Syria, Hardin Lang of the Center for American Progress, Doug Ollivant of the New America Foundation, and Andrew Tabler of the Washington Institute.

President Obama’s announcement of a new U.S. strategy to combat ISIS in both Iraq and Syria will require a concerted effort to build a committed coalition of partners both regionally and locally to effectively defeat the extremist group. A critical challenge will be building an effective and reliable partner within the Syrian opposition that will be capable of combating both ISIS and the Assad regime.

Speakers:
Ambassador Robert S. Ford, Senior Fellow, Middle East Institute; former U.S. Ambassador to Syria
Hardin Lang, Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress
Douglas A. Ollivant, Senior Fellow, New America Foundation
Andrew J. Tabler, Senior Fellow, Washington Institute for Near East Policy
