Washington D.C. — On Thursday, April 19 the Center for American Progress will host former Rep. David Obey (D-WI) and a panel of distinguished economic experts, including Jacob Hacker and Branko Milanovic, for a wide-ranging discussion on how inequality affects governing and economic growth in the United States and the world. The conversation will be moderated by Washington Post columnist Ezra Klein.
Too much income concentrated in a small number of hands can lead to policies that are harmful to the economy, while a strong middle class can provide supportive conditions for good governance, creating a counterweight against those who would use their wealth to influence government for their own benefit instead of the nation as a whole. And good governance—with strong and inclusive institutions and public investments in education and infrastructure—is good for growth. This is widely held to be true for less-developed countries. Panelists at the event will discuss how this applies to the United States today.
This event is part of a yearlong series of events and publications on the importance of the middle class to our economy.
