Washington, D.C. — At a press breakfast on Thursday, April 12, immigration policy and legal experts will walk through what to expect from the Supreme Court’s review of Arizona’s state-level immigration bill S.B. 1070, and the legal, social, and political implications of this case for our country.
The Supreme Court’s review of Arizona’s anti-immigration law is a watershed moment for the United States. The decision will go far in deciding to what extent an individual state can engage in immigration enforcement, and what rules a state can make regarding the immigration status and civil liberties of its residents. Historically, state efforts to enforce immigration laws and make immigration policy have been constitutionally barred or pre-empted because immigration policy is exclusively a federal responsibility. The Arizona law, S.B. 1070, and similar measures in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Utah, are, in effect, challenging that principle of federal supremacy in the field of immigration. The panel will explore the legal principles before the Court as well as the societal implications given the nation’s rapidly changing demographics and the enhanced likelihood for racial profiling.
