Washington, D.C. — As Congress considers cuts to its short and long term funding bill, and there are looming threats to shut down the government, there is growing concern on the direct and indirect effects on the economy. The Center for American Progress and the Economic Policy Institute have organized this media call to discuss the real economic price of deep budget cuts and a potential shut down.
Former Appropriations staff member and CAP Senior Fellow Scott Lilly will discuss the real economic effects – from delaying patents to stopping meat inspection by federal officials – which he observed as a key Capitol Hill staff member during the last government shut down. He will be joined by John Irons, who will speak to the macro-economic effects of the spending cuts under consideration as a part of current short term stop-gap spending measures.
