CTU foolish to fight Common Core

Carmel Martin explains why the Chicago Teacher's Union is mistaken in the vote to abandon the Common Core.

Over the past year Glenn Beck, tea party activists and the billionaire Koch brothers have been the loudest voices fueling a backlash against the new Common Core student achievement standards. Last week, the right-wing gained an unlikely new ally: the Chicago Teachers’ Union. The CTU voted last week in favor of completely abandoning the Common Core.

CTU’s resolution to ‘eliminate the use of the Common Core for teaching’ is shortsighted. The standards themselves represent an opportunity to set a higher bar, and replace America’s flawed and misaligned standards from the No Child Left Behind era to better equip our students for college and jobs in the global economy.
