The Public’s Disconnect with the Military

Military leaders are rightly becoming concerned about the increasing gulf between military people and society in a time when this nation is engaged in two long wars. Ten years ago, Marine Lt. Gen. John Kelly, the military assistant to the secretary of defense, whose son Robert was killed in Afghanistan, told an audience, “we are in a life-and-death struggle, but not our whole country. One percent of Americans are touched by this war. Then there is a much smaller club of families who have given all.”
