Statement of John D. Podesta

Our nation is only as safe as it is free. Instead of pursuing sound, sensible law enforcement, intelligence-gathering and immigration policies, the Bush Administration has engaged in measures that are both excessive and unfocused — diminishing both our safety and our liberty.

The Center for American Progress is proud to join with Senators Edward Kennedy, John Corzine, Richard Durbin, Russ Feingold, and Patrick Leahy, and Representatives Howard Berman and William Delahunt, who today have introduced the Civil Liberties Restoration Act (CLRA) — a thoughtful and reasonable effort that limits the government's ability to conduct secret arrests, requires individuals be advised of the charges brought against them, and upholds federal privacy laws.

By helping to restore respect for the rule of law, the CLRA will enhance our security at home and abroad.
