America Remembers Its Heroes
This Memorial Day weekend marks the dedication of the National World War II Memorial on the Mall in Washington. As America continues to fight the global war on terrorism, it is a fitting and long overdue monument to the unity and strength of the 16.4 million men and women who served in WWII and the millions of other Americans who made the war effort possible.
- With strength and honor, Americans fought Nazism and fascism in the 20th century. As the bell tolls for more and more of our greatest generation, this is a chance to celebrate our heroes from WWII. These men and women solidified America's position as the preeminent military, economic and moral force in the world. We can not forget the price they paid for what we enjoy today. Allied battles against Axis powers raged across six continents and claimed more than 290,000 American lives and 670,000 wounded. We owe tremendous gratitude to all those who sacrificed to defend our freedoms.
- The fight for democracy and freedom continues today in the war against terrorism. Just as Pearl Harbor galvanized America to fight and triumph over fascism, the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, have forced our nation to confront the global threat of terrorism. While we did not ask for this challenge, Americans have again risen to the occasion and draw strength from the valor and commitment of those who battled before us.
- America remains a force for good in the world. This weekend, we will hear stories of ordinary citizens who did extraordinary and heroic things in distant places because they believed in the virtue of the cause; they trusted their leadership; and they were prepared to fight and die for their squad, their squadron, their ship and for loved ones back home who were working and sacrificing for the same cause. As today's defenders of freedom and democracy, we must honor their memory by continuing to show the world that America will always defend what is right and moral in the world.
