Protecting Women from Gun Violence

June 18, 2014, 1:00pm ET - 2:30pm ET

Levels of gun violence remain unacceptably high in this country, and judging from the daily toll of gun murders to the extraordinary acts of mass violence such as the one that occurred in Isla Vista just days ago, women are too often the targets of gun violence. Every day, five women are murdered with guns in the United States, a large percentage of whom are killed by their intimate partners.

Enacting strong laws and policies to prevent domestic abusers from having easy access to guns is therefore critical to reducing murders of women. Such laws are both politically popular and have proven policy impact. In recent months, momentum has been building on both the state and federal levels to enact strong new gun laws to better protect women—particularly, victims of domestic violence and stalking—from fatal gun violence.

Please join the Center for American Progress, Americans for Responsible Solutions, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline for a discussion of policy solutions to protect women from gun violence.
