Nick Lovegrove
Nick Lovegrove is a Director of McKinsey & Company, and the Managing Partner of McKinsey's Washington, DC Office. Nick moved to Washington in 2007 after 22 years in McKinsey's London Office, during which he was elected a Partner of the firm in 1989 and a Director in 1995.
In his current role, Nick has overall responsibility for McKinsey's service to its Washington-based clients, which include private sector companies, federal government departments and agencies, multilateral institutions and industry associations. His own client service is focused on performance improvement in healthcare, education and economic development.
In addition, Nick has global responsibility for McKinsey's research and knowledge development on public sector performance and economic development. He is an active writer and speaker on public sector reform. And for the last 12 years, he has been a leading contributor to the McKinsey Global Institute (McKinsey's internal economic think tank). He was the principal author of MGI's 1998 review of productivity and growth in the UK economy, which influenced the early years of the Blair administration. And more recently, he has co-authored MGI reports on industrial competitiveness, income distribution, job creation and health care economics in the US. He frequently speaks at industry conferences and seminars on these and other topics.
From 2003 to 2007, while still based in London, Nick led McKinsey's European Government & Public Sector Practice. During that period, he advised numerous UK government departments and agencies - as well as their counterparts in Europe - on issues of organizational transformation, governance and performance improvement.
Prior to that - from 1997 to 2003 - he led McKinsey's European Media, Entertainment & Information Practice. His clients during that period included some of the leading broadcasters, newspaper and magazine publishers, information services and industry regulators. This came after more than a decade of client service in the private sector, including consumer goods, retail, metals and mining, and telecoms.
In a personal capacity, Nick served as an independent adviser to the UK Prime Minister's Strategy Unit from 2001 to 2005. He led substantial research programs on education strategy, the use of information technology in schools, and vocational training among young adults. He has also served on two non-profit Boards in the UK - the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he was a Director for 6 years; and TeachFirst, where he was a Founder Director.
Nick received an M.A. degree in Modern History from Oxford University. He was selected as both a Kennedy Scholar and a Harkness Fellow for studies in the US, and he graduated from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University with a Master's degree in Public Policy. He subsequently received an MBA with distinction from INSEAD in France. Nick is a UK citizen and a permanent resident in the US. He is married with 4 children and lives in Washington, DC.
