Susan Schurman

Susan Schurman is Dean of the University College Community at Rutgers – the State University of New Jersey. She is also professor II in the School of Management and Labor Relations and Director of Lifelong Learning in the Division of Continuous Education and Outreach. Dr. Schurman served from 1997-2007 as the founding president of the National Labor College an independent degree-completion college in Maryland supported by the AFL-CIO. The NLC is designed to articulate with apprenticeships, military training and other certified vocational/occupational postsecondary education/training. She received B.A. and M.A. degrees from Michigan State University and a Ph.D from the University of Michigan. During her doctoral studies she was director of the Labor Studies Center and a research investigator in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. She is a former local union president and has served on numerous nonprofit boards. In 2001 Maryland Governor Paris Glendenning appointed her to the newly created State Higher Education Labor Relations Board. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Morris Brown College in Atlanta and is president of the International Federation of Workers Education Associations.
