Vali Nasr

Vali Nasr is senior advisor to the Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. He is also professor of international politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University, Senior Fellow at the Kennedy School of Harvard University, and former adjunct Senior Fellow for Middle East studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Vali is a specialist on Middle East and South Asia, and has worked extensively on Pakistan. He is the author of Forces of Fortune: The Rise of a New Muslim Middle Class and What It Will Mean for Our World (2009); The Shia Revival (2006); Democracy in Iran (2006); The Islamic Leviathan: Islam and the Making of State Power (2001); and The Vanguard of the Islamic Revolution: The Jama'at-i Islami of Pakistan (1994). He has also written for New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and Time. Vali was a Carnegie Scholar in 2006 and grant recipient from John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation.
