Nancy Killefer

Nancy Killefer is a senior director in the Washington, D.C. office of McKinsey and Company, the global management consulting firm. She leads McKinsey's Public Sector Practice, specializing in developing strategies and improving organizational performance for a range of government clients.

Killefer joined McKinsey in 1979 and ran its Washington office from 2000 to 2007. During her career, she has focused on strategy, marketing and organizational effectiveness, and efficiency issues.

From 1997 to 2000, she served as assistant secretary for management, CFO and COO at the U. S. Department of the Treasury. In addition to overall management responsibilities for treasury's 14 bureaus and 160,000 people, Killefer led a major modernization at the Internal Revenue Service, prepared treasury's systems for Y2K and reshaped management processes, including installing an asset management program across the Treasury Department. After leaving the Department of the Treasury and returning to McKinsey, she served on the IRS Oversight Board from 2000 to 2005 and as its chairperson from 2002 to 2004.

She is a member of the Board of Directors of The Partnership for Public Service and Vital Voices. She also serves on the Board of Advisors of Catalyst and on the Board of Trustees of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Killefer received her M.B.A. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School. She holds a B.A. with honors in economics from Vassar College. Prior to business school, she worked as an associate at Charles River Associates, a microeconomics consulting firm.
