Bernard Sherman

From September 1960 to June 1964, Dr. Bernard C. Sherman studied engineering physics at the University of Toronto. In June 1964, he graduated with a bachelor of applied science degree and was awarded the Professional Engineer's Gold Medal for standing first in the engineering graduating class. In September 1964, he undertook graduate studies in the instrumentation program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned a master of science degree in June 1965, and a doctorate in philosophy degree in aeronautics and astronomics in January 1967.

In 1967, Dr. Sherman, together with Mr. Joel D. Ulster, purchased Empire Laboratories, a pharmaceutical manufacturing company in Toronto.

From October 1967 to January 1972, Dr. Sherman served as president and director of technical operations of Sherman and Ulster Limited, operating as Empire Laboratories. In January 1972, Sherman and Ulster Limited was sold to International Chemical and Nuclear Corporation.

In 1974, Dr. Sherman founded Apotex Inc., a new manufacturer of generic prescription drugs. In the 35 years since that date, Apotex Inc. has developed into the largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company and now has worldwide operations with over 5,300 employees in Canada and research and development expenditures of $2 billion over the next 10 years.

Dr. Sherman is also a principal shareholder of numerous other private and public companies, both in Canada, the United States, and elsewhere.

Dr. Sherman is legacy chair of the United Jewish Appeal; member of the B'nai Brith Canada Advisory Board; member of the Association of Professional Engineers of the Province of Ontario; director of the Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association; member of the board of governors of Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care; former director of Mount Sinai Hospital of Toronto; and a major donor to the Jewish National Fund.
