Nancy Metcalf

Nancy Metcalf is a senior program editor at Consumer Reports magazine, specializing in health and medical care. Since joining the magazine in 1990, she has reported, written, and edited reports on topics such as health insurance, dangerous dietary supplements, diet/weight loss, the marketing of prescription drugs, food safety, exercise, vaccine safety, hospital safety, mental health care, and alternative medicine.

Ms. Metcalf has appeared on national TV on the CBS "Early Show," the CBS "Evening News," NBC's "The Today Show," and CNN, and she is a frequent guest on news-talk radio programs across the country. Three of her articles for Consumer Reports have been finalists for the prestigious National Magazine Award, and she has been honored with the Science-in-Society Journalism Award of the Council for Advancement of Science Writing and two awards for national public interest magazine journalism from Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalists.

Before joining Consumer Reports, she was a freelance medical writer and contributed articles to national publications including In Health, Women's Day, Reader's Digest, Working Mother, and Medical World News. She also was a consultant to the Connecticut Commission on Hospitals and Health Care.

Earlier, she worked as a medical and environmental reporter and editor at the Hartford Courant (Conn.). She is a graduate of Wellesley College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
