Peter C. Gorman
Peter C. Gorman, Ed.D., has more than two decades of experience in education. He has been superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, or CMS, since July 2006. With a background that blends business and education, Gorman believes that high academic achievement, transparency, and accountability are essential for a successful public school district.
Gorman began his educational career in Orlando, FL, in 1987 after graduating from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. He taught second grade, then science in the sixth grade, before becoming a dean of students in the Orange County (Orlando) Public Schools. He subsequently became an assistant principal for a middle school, then a high school. He was a high school principal from 1994 to 1997 in Longwood, FL, in Seminole County.
In 1997, he became assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Osceola County schools. In 1998, he returned to the Orange County (Orlando) school system as area superintendent. He was named chief operating officer for business and finance in that system, and then became chief information officer. He moved to Tustin, CA, in 2001 as superintendent of schools there, leaving to join CMS in 2006. Gorman, a native of Dearborn, MI, holds a master's in business administration from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, and a master's and doctorate in education from the University of Central Florida. He also attended the New Superintendents Institute at Harvard University in 1998. He was named a fellow at the Broad Urban Superintendents Academy in 2004.
In addition to his role as superintendent, Gorman is active in the Charlotte community. He serves on the boards of the United Way, Charlotte Center City Partners, The Institute for Social Capital, the Boy Scouts, and Junior Achievement, as well as the board of trustees for Communities in Schools, the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, MecDec Day, NC State Employees Credit Union, Scholastic Administrator Magazine, South End Jazz, The King's Kitchen Charity, WTVI, and Right Moves for Youth.
Gorman and his wife, Sue, an interior designer and active community volunteer, have one daughter. Eleven-year-old Katie is a student in CMS.
