John Gearhart
John Gearhart led one of the two research teams that first identified and isolated human pluripotent stem cells in 1998. This July, he was named director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and also a Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor. Dr. Gearhart's official title is the James W. Effron University Professor and his appointment is jointly shared between the School of Medicine and the School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Gearhart was previously the C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Stem Cell Program and the Division of Developmental Genetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. in genetics in 1970 from Cornell University, M.Sc. in plant genetics in 1966 from the University of New Hampshire and B.Sc. in biology in 1964 from Penn State University.
