Josipa Roksa

Josipa Roksa is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia, with a courtesy appointment in the Curry School of Education. Born and raised in Croatia, she received her Ph.D. from New York University in 2006, and a B.A., summa cum laude, from Mount Holyoke College in 2000. Her research encompasses a wide range of issues concerning social inequality, with a specific focus on educational stratification. Professor Roksa has conducted a diverse set of research projects and is currently focusing on two lines of inquiry. The first one involves a set of projects examining transfer in higher education and investigating the extent to which community colleges can serve as a route toward a bachelor's degree for less academically prepared students and those from racial minority groups. The second line of inquiry involves the study of learning outcomes in higher education, titled "Learning in Higher Education: Are Disadvantaged Students Catching Up or Falling Further Behind?" which focuses on factors shaping knowledge and skill development of students from racial minority groups and less advantaged family backgrounds, and in particular African American and Hispanic males.
